Roots Picnic 2023: A CDHQ Recap

We’re still riding high off the annual Roots Picnic in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia this past weekend. Culture District HQ’s, Wilde Tuna, and Jerome “Romey,” attended the festival while Maria Myraine executive produced this year’s coverage. Every year, it seems as though the Picnic gets bigger and better, and this year’s was no different. Tens of thousands of festival-goers, from all walks of life, gathered for what would be a momentous three-day event.

Top-notch performers, like Usher, Lil Uzi Vert, Lauryn Hill, and Glorilla, touched the various festival stages, electrifying the park from start to finish. Like Roots Picnics of the past, 2023’s also played host to a long-awaited reunion from State Property, while groups. Ike the Isley Brothers, City Girls, Maverick City, Little Brother, and Little Brother came together to deliver standout performances.

A surprise reunion also occurred when festival headliner, Lauryn Hill, brought out The Fugees for an EPIC performance backed by The Roots, of course!!

Amidst the music stages, was also a Podcast Stage that featured talents like Charlamagne The God, DJ Akademiks, and Talib Kweli. Voices of the culture, like Angela Yee, were also spotted on the festival grounds.

In addition to a line-up of legendary performances, the Picnic also played host to local artists, vendors, and more, spotlighting Philadelphia’s creatives and small businesses. As always, it was truly a celebration of culture, the arts, and the city of Brotherly Love.
